“Memleketim” is an immersive, culturally rich concert experience designed to connect with the Turkish community in the Netherlands and with those interested in Middle Eastern culture. With an estimated half a million Dutch citizens of Turkish descent (according to the Central Bureau of Statistics), this production aims to bridge the gap in classical music programming by presenting a concert that reflects the identity of this often underrepresented audience—and unlocks its enormous potential.
The concert takes listeners on a musical journey through the seven regions of Turkey, showcasing their most beloved folk songs through storytelling and music. To reflect the modern cultural identity, composer Orkun Agir has been commissioned to create new works inspired by these regions, blending traditional Turkish elements with contemporary influences. This collaboration seeks to embrace the evolving identity of newer generations, such as the Dutch-Turkish community.
The program’s title, Memleketim—meaning “my homeland” in Turkish—reflects the selection of folk songs and unites the Turkish diaspora, whose roots span all corners of the country. The program culminates in the performance of Turkish music icon Fazıl Say’s masterpiece Memleketim, a work that shares the concert’s title. This piece, along with the performances of exceptional Dutch-Turkish artists Aylin Sezer and Orkun Agir, symbolizes the intersection of East and West, past and present.
To enhance the authenticity of the experience, the stage will feature lighting and decor inspired by the vibrant aesthetics of Turkish culture, while the musicians’ attire will incorporate subtle nods to traditional Turkish dress. Thanks to the unique expertise of Amin Amel Ebrahimi and Orkun Agir—both deeply versed in classical and Middle Eastern music—this concert promises to deliver an exceptional and unforgettable experience.
This production aims to spark new dialogues between cultures that are rarely represented in the classical music world, yet hold immense potential to enrich the repertoire and attract new and diverse audiences to our performances.
